Wayne Grudem, author of Systematic Theology, broadly describes a spiritual gift as “any ability that is empowered by the Holy Spirit and used in any ministry of the church” .   The purpose of God giving us spiritual gifts is clear: “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other” (1 Corinthians ). We are not given spiritual gifts so we can feel good about ourselves; we are not given spiritual gifts so we can look good to others; we are not given spiritual gifts to manipulate or get our own way.

The believer answers a series of questions designed to discover his or her specific gifts. Just as the gift of salvation is by grace through faith, so are the spiritual gifts.

Our God is so generous. He is constantly giving us things. “Christ has generously divided out his gifts to us.” (Ephesians CEV) It’s His grace at work in our lives.

3 Kinds of Spiritual Gifts. There are three kinds of spiritual gifts. From scriptural passages, Christians understand the spiritual gifts to be abilities or skills that are divinely provided in individuals.

The purpose of the spiritual gifts is to build up, inspire, and support the church. These gifts are mentioned multiple times through various books of the Bible.
